BeyondKONA: Climate
With each passing year above normal ocean temperatures set new temperature records, fueling stronger and longer El Nino events and superstorms that threaten Hawaii’s residents, environmental assets, and economy.
Hawaii’s sea surface temperature continues to rise; the result of global warming effects on sea and air temperatures caused primarily by human burning of fossil fuels.
West Hawaii’s reef system and many other parts of the state’s island chain have and are experiencing widespread die-off of corals, impacting entire near shore marine ecosystems. Weather and trade wind patterns are changing, the threat of new and stronger super storms is now the new norm, and sea levels continue to rise as Hawai’i remains mostly unprepared for these changes.
